How is the procedure done?
Our Hygienist sits on the floor with your pet’s head in her lap. Small dogs are wrapped in a towel to make them feel more secure. Our Hygienist will examine and assess your pet’s mouth and teeth. If she has any concerns she will discuss this with you and if necessary refer you to a veterinarian. As well, if during the cleaning process she finds any problems she will put the information in a report so you can discuss the issue with your veterinarian. Your pet’s teeth are scaled with an ultra-sonic scaler that uses water and vibration to remove tartar build up. Once the procedure is completed you will receive a report for your files.
Do you clean under the gum line?
No, we find that procedure to be unnecessary and generally causes great discomfort to your pet. If your pet has deep pockets in the gums or other issues then our Hygienist will advise you to consult your veterinarian.
How effective is this method?
The procedure is very effective in removing an accumulation of tartar and in maintaining your pet’s oral and subsequently, general health. In normal cases cleaning should be performed once a year. In some circumstances we might not be able to remove all the tartar: i.e. deep pockets in the gums, exposure of roots or excessive movement of your pet.
Certified Pet Oral Hygienists are not authorized to pull teeth or take X-Rays. Therefore we cannot see what is going on under the gum line.
Are some animals not suitable for anesthesia-free cleaning procedures?
Animals with heart/liver/kidney disease or that are in general poor health require a veterinary referral. The procedure is not suitable for dogs or cats on immune-suppressing prescription medications (i.e. prednisone) or those with severe gum disease or very loose molars. Nor is it appropriate for animals with a history of bite aggression towards people. Do you have any other questions or concerns?
